Trivia

What shapes the tactics: the regulations, the tyres, the circuits – and what the data shows when you look closely.

2026

The regulations

50/50 power unit, active aerodynamics, override mode, energy budget and what it does to a pit stop.

Pirelli

The tyres

C1–C5, the weekend's nominations, and what the library says about degradation and tyre life per compound.

From the races

The circuits

Overtaking threshold, pit loss under green, VSC and SC, degradation and Safety Car frequency – circuit by circuit.

Sound Lab

The engine sound

Hear the 2026 V6, a concept 2030 V8 and the 2013 V8 through eight gears – and why cylinders, revs and the turbo decide the note.

FIA documents

The upgrades

What every team changed on its car before every race – floor, wings, cooling – from the FIA's official Car Presentation Submissions, race by race.

From the data

More overtaking in 2026

Across ten circuits raced in both 2025 and 2026: 29 β†’ 39 overtakes per race, and the share of close battles that end in a pass up from 9 β†’ 16%. Fewer cars get stuck – the moves stick. Monza 30 β†’ 80.

Practice sessions lie about degradation

FP2 long runs overestimate degradation by a factor of 2–8 compared with the race: short runs on the limit in the tyre's steep phase, versus a race stint driven to a target pace.

The undercut drives the field

The field stops 4–10 laps earlier than pure time optimisation suggests. With covering and undercut threats in the field simulation, the error shrinks to 3 laps.
